On the 4th day of the 5th month, when the Gregorian calendar hits the 124th day of the year, fans across the galaxy celebrate Star Wars day. It’s the nerdiest day of the year with Star Wars fans across the galaxy declaring May the 4th an unofficial holiday. Every May, since 2011, people have ditched the standard, ‘have a great day’ for ‘May the 4th be with you’, a spin on ‘May the force be with you’.

So how did the geekiest pun of all time come to be and why do fans go crazy over Star Wars Day?

Maybe it’s something to do with the stars: Margaret Thatcher has a thing for Star Wars On the 4th of May in 1979, Margaret Thatcher became Britain’s first female prime minister. Quick Star Wars facts to get you through the day

1. Darth Vader is three actors in one! James Earl Jones is his voice, David Prowse is his body, and Sabastian Shaw is his face. Wonder if Luke’s even more confused on who his dad is now. 2 You can speak Ewok. Learn Tibetan and Nepalese, mash them together and you’ll be talking like a cute furry little dude in no time at all. 3. Liam Neeson (Qui-Gon) blew The Phantom Menace budget by $150,000 for being too damn tall! He couldn’t fit through doorways and hallways so sets had to be rebuilt. 4. George Lucas’ daughter loved N-Sync so much that they filmed a cameo for Attack of The Clones. Luckily for the rest of us, this scene was cut from the movie. 5. Ewan McGregor was so super excited to be swinging around a light sabre that he couldn’t stop making the noises while filming combat scenes. Sound editors had to fix it during post-production as he couldn’t stop. What a big kid. 6. George Lucas loves his kids so much that the all appear in the second trilogy at one stage of another. Hint: If you want to play ‘spot the Lucas’, you’ll have to scan the background extras.
