Deadpool 2 facts: all you need to know before you go

Teasers, theories, trailers, and tidbits on the upcoming sequel

The guy with a face like an over-nuked potato, and his Marvel and DC Comic cronies, is set to hit cinemas in May, for Deadpool’s much-anticipated sequel. We take a look at what we can expect for the upcoming Deadpool film before the May 17 release.

The Cable Guy

cable from deadpool 2 Teasers, released in August last year, which revealed that Cable, co-titular character from Cable & Deadpool, would be making his appearance in the sequel, were met with righteous applause from fans. Cable was set to appear in the first film, but it was decided to postpone his appearance to the potential sequel, so that the first Deadpool story could be thoroughly built. And build it they did. Everyone loved it. Josh Brolin is superbly cast as futuristic warrior Cable. He’s bulked up and strapped into an armoured vest resembling Terminator 2 spawn, complete with robotic arm and red laser-beam eye. Cable has a long and complicated backstory, even by X-Men standards. Is there a plot?

deadpool as bob ross The teaser clips have been smart in not only providing some major LOLs in the lead-up, but also not giving any of the DP2 story away. Instead, it proceeded to wind audiences up with bazaar footage of Deadpool mimicking Bob Ross’s ‘The Joy of Painting’ show, as well as an obscure special invitation, for attendees of Comic-Con Brazil, to get tattooed for free. Deadpool 2 hits full superhero mode. The story goes that Cable time travels from the future and, for reasons not hinted at in the trailer, is hell-bent on killing a young, possibly mutant boy. Deadpool is roped into saving the kid and recruits a posse of trusted, super-powered freaks to help fend off Cable. It’s all chronicled with hallmarked 'what the hell' moments and potty-mouthed hilarity.

Familiar faces and mysterious new ones

deadpool trailer shot Returning to Deadpool’s side, to form the tritely named X-Force, are Colossus, punk-kid Negasonic Teenage Warhead and cab driver Dopinda. Plus, you’ll meet newcomers Domino, Jessie Bedlam and an electricity-wielding character, suspected to be Surge (X-Men). If you look carefully, there are glimpses of other superheroes in the trailer, but to leave some mystery for the actual film, it’s not clear who they are. Wade's on-again-off-again girlfriend Vanessa, sidekick Weasel and sometimes-flatmate Blind Al also have their share of scenes, and banter, slinging with Deadpool.

Better - but not bigger - with a new director

Director David Leitch of John Wick fame has stepped in to command the sequel ship. Despite the first films unexpected immense success, original director Tim Miller bowed out, reportedly because of budget concerns, and the ‘bigger and better’ expectation demanded of all hit movie sequels. The word on the street is - okay, producer Simon Kinberg’s words, in fact - is that that won’t be the case. He told Entertainment Weekly, "We have to resist the temptation to make it bigger in scale and scope, which is normally what you do when you have a surprise hit movie”.

It’s still all about Deadpool though

omg deadpool Despite the X-Force team forming in this film and overt commentary in the script that signals franchise feels, Deadpool is still the centre of the story. With less time to spend on telling Wade Wilson’s backstory this time around, there’s more room for mayhem and destruction, with adequate doses of the awkwardness, innuendo, f-bombs, and violence that made the original so well-liked. Anyone who follows Ryan Reynolds on Twitter will understand how his deadpan humour makes him perfectly cast as Deadpool. He craftily walks the satirical tightrope of ‘oh, he didn't say that’. You can be sure he’s had creative freedom to bring on the scripted snort-laughs. Cool guy side note: Reynolds recently threw his celebrity clout - and Deadpool 2 promo opportunity - behind LetsFCancer. So Deadpool.

Fourth-walling in your face

deadpool 2 adult mens costume Deadpool doesn’t give a stuffed Thanksgiving turkey about breaking the fourth wall. They do it. Many times. Before your eyes. It’s done so well and creates more risky moments, where you shouldn’t take a sip of your drink while watching. Sorry. Not sorry. Deadpool and other Marvel characters will no doubt be in demand as popularity spikes with the sequel release. Blossoms Costumes have a super awesome range for you to choose from.
