How To Nail A 90s Themed Birthday Party

Throw A Like, Totally Awesome 90s Themed Birthday Party, Or Whatever

The 90s — the decade of dial-up internet (remember that?) and laugh-track sitcoms. Of corded landline phones, the Sims, and the Rachel haircut. It was a time to be alive, if you got to experience the 90s, and a time for the next generation to look back on and wonder why we loved it so much.

Because we did love the 90s. It was an era filled with a mishmash of styles trends, toy fads, and iconic movies. To pay homage to the lovable 90s, and give yourself a hit of nostalgia, make it the theme for your birthday party!

We've put together a bangin' guide for how to organise your party, including creating the ultimate music playlist and mixing delicious 90s-inspired cocktails.

Food to keep guests rollin' with the homies

90s food theme

The difference between a good party and a great party lies in how much food is provided. Never let party people get hungry! And what better way to keep the buzz going than with sugar. These lollies and sweet treats will be a trip down memory lane for you and your guests.

  • • Dunkaroos
  • • Hubba bubba
  • • War Heads and ghost drops
  • • Push pops
  • • Fruit roll-ups
  • • Fairy bread
  • • Fizzers
  • • Fad sticks
  • • Wonka Nerds
  • • Whizz Fizz

Make sure you place bowls of these 90s gems in high traffic areas. If you're in the mood for savoury food, you could grab some bags of potato smiles, party pies, and sausage rolls. If keeping an eye on the oven is too much effort (after all, you want to enjoy your party), you could pull a Joey and Chandler and just order pizza.

Did someone say cocktails?

This is where you can get creative. In addition to the must-haves like Cottees cordial (the cordial that you like best) and Pop Top Cool Blue drinks, you can make a range of cocktails inspired by the 90s.

  • • Add pop rocks to prosecco to create the fizziest drink you'll have ever tasted
  • • Mix Fanta with your spirit of choice to create a 'nicke-loaded' cocktail
  • • Create your own beverage inspired by Clueless by mixing Savignon Blanc, lemongrass syrup, lemon juice and Aperol together
  • • Pick up some Wonka Fun Dips and create your own shots (recipe here)

Costumes

90s costumes

This is the best part of the party preparation. Are you going to dress up as a character from one of your favourite 90s movies or TV shows? Maybe you're going to rock a video game character's costume. There are so many costume options to choose from, it can feel overwhelming. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Unisex

Female

  • • Stuff waiting for Mario at the castle, Princess Peach is coming to the party
  • • It was supposed to go on the ground? Nah, Twister looks great on you!
  • • Beauty and the Beast

Male

  • • Keep it real as Ali G
  • • Mamma mia! It's pretty hard to choose between Luigi and Mario
  • • Gotta catch 'em all! Who can resist this Ash Ketchum costume

Whichever costume you choose, make it loud.

Games and activities

The 90s was a time of youthful fun for many of us. Bring out your inner child and play the games from your childhood. Some classic 90s board games include:

  • • Hungry Hungry Hippos
  • • The Game of Life
  • • Mouse Trap
  • • Twister
  • • Operation

Then there are the video games! If you really want to go all out, and you have the means, you can get a Nintendo 64 and rig up a projector so you and your guests can play tournaments against each other.

Decorations

In the 90s, people loved neon colours and flashing lights — and glow sticks. If you have any 90s memorabilia lying around, put it on show! Yes, get that Furby out of your memory chest and place your old (RIP) Tamagotchis on tables near food. You can really deck out your crib by creating your own:

  • • Table risers: Pick up old VHS tapes from an op shop. Use a paintbrush to spread glue along the sides, then sprinkle glitter on top. Then sack them to create table risers which you can set your bowls of Ghost Drops on.
  • • Chain link wall decorations: Connect with your inner child and get that construction paper out, it's time to make chain links
  • • CD wall art: Nothing says the 90s more than this CD installation, check out how to make it here.

Tunes

The 90s gave birth to beautiful music, from boy (and girl) bands to grunge and R'n'B. If you want to go old school, use a boombox and stereo, and stream a classic 90s playlist. Choose whatever takes your fancy, but we recommend these headbangers and booty shakers.

Boy and girl bands

  • • Everybody (Backstreet Boys)
  • • Bye Bye Bye (*NSYNC)
  • • Keep on Moving (Five)
  • • S Club Party (S Club 7
  • • Spice Up Your Life (Spice Girls)

Grunge/Rock/Punk

  • • Come As You Are (Nirvana)
  • • Killing In The Name (Rage Against The Machine)
  • • All The Small Things (blink-182)
  • • Song 2 (Blur)
  • • Kryptonite (3 Doors Down)
  • • Walking Contradiction (Green Day)
  • • Wonderwall (Oasis)

R'n'B

  • • You Make Me Wanna (Usher)
  • • No Diggity (Blackstreet)
  • • Hypnotize (The Notorious B.I.G)
  • • Pony (Ginuwine)
  • • Love Like This (Faith Evans)

Now you've got your crib decked out, your music pumping, and food and beverages sorted, all you have to do is put on your costume and enjoy your birthday party!
