1. Super strength and speed

Aquaman possesses super strength that he uses both in the ocean and on land. He can lift up to 10,000 tons. Previous adventures have seen him performing superhuman feats from holding up a collapsing skyscraper to throwing around ships with his bare hands – and this is just the beginning. When the king of the ocean needs to be somewhere in a hurry, he can rely on hypersonic speed to get him there in no time. Aquaman is able to swim at the speed of Mach 5 – effectively swimming at five times the speed of sound. That's way faster than a jet!

2. Supernatural abilities

While they haven't been revealed in the new 52 line of comics, Aquaman has been known to possess supernatural abilities in the past. Previous encounters have seen him control the weather to summon bolts of lightning and unleash tidal waves on his enemies. With the combination of his ability to control marine life and the weather, it's easy to imagine how he could create a sharknado if he really wanted to!

3. The mighty trident

Aquaman's trident is one of the strongest weapons in the DC universe. This pronged staff is indestructible and has been used to impart damage on powerful foes like Darkseid. With his trident, Aquaman is able to fire blasts of energy and even create force fields. This weapon is also one of the seven magical items that the original king of Atlantis, Atlan, forged many centuries ago. Impressive, huh?

4. One of the founding members of the JLA

No matter which comic series you read, Aquaman has always been one of the seven founding members of the Justice League. In the new 52 comics, Aquaman rushes to the aid of his fellow Justice League members when he discovers that Earth is being invaded by parademons. With his expert knowledge of combat strategy, he's always budding heads with Batman, demanding that he should be the one in charge of the Justice League. In addition, Aquaman has also proven he can hold his own in fights against fellow Justice League members like Superman and Green Lantern.

5. King of Atlantis and the seven seas

After saving Metropolis and Gotham from the attacks of his half-brother, Orm, Aquaman became the king of Atlantis. However, keeping the crown hasn't been easy for the new king. He's constantly being challenged by those who oppose his rule. Being king of Atlantis comes with the great responsibility of safeguarding the entire ocean from any threats. Aquaman also commands an army of soldiers that possess superhuman strength and weaponry enhanced by Atlantean technology.

6. He controls sea creatures

People love to make fun of the fact that Aquaman can talk to fish. This is actually false. It was recently explained in the new 52 comics that he has the ability to telepathically control fish to do his bidding. Because after all, fish brains are just way too primitive to even have a conversation. Previous adventures have seen Aquaman control deadly great white sharks to serve him. In one badass comic event, he even takes control of a gigantic sea creature called Topo, who destroys a fleet of submarines attacking Atlantis.

7. He's part of the ultimate power couple

The story of how Aquaman first met his future wife and queen of Atlantis is unlike any love story you've heard before. Mera was the princess of Xebel, a kingdom that was exiled by Atlantis. In order to exact revenge for her kingdom, she was assigned with the task of assassinating the watery warrior. The plan was for Mera to gain Aquaman's trust before taking his life. But something unexpected happened – she fell in love with him! Now married, Aquaman and Mera continue to fight side by side as they rule over Atlantis. Mera also possesses some awesome powers herself, including super strength and the ability to bend water.

8. Great villains with decent motives

Some people say heroes are only as good as their villains. Over the years Aquaman has faced off against some pretty powerful foes including Ocean Master, Atlan, and Black Manta just to name a few. What makes Aquaman's villains so great are their motivations. Black Manta is clearly motivated by revenge after Aquaman mistakenly murders his father. Ocean Master (aka Orm Marius) is another great example. Ocean Master takes it upon himself to mount a full-scale attack on Metropolis and Gotham city after Atlantis is bombed by submarines.

9. Harpoon for a hand

Back in the 90s, DC comics were given a darker and grittier reboot. Aquaman's clean-cut look and noble demeanour were ditched in favour of a more rugged aesthetic and aggressive attitude. After losing his hand in battle, Aquaman came up with an ingenius solution – he decided to replace his lost limb with a harpoon!
