Here are the biggest Halloween costumes from this year
Halloween is over for another year. And here at Blossom, it was also a record month for Halloween costumes. Each year gets bigger and better.
So what were the biggest Halloween costumes from this year? To find out, we collected together our sales data and reviewed our hottest selling items.
From traditional styles to modern classics, here are the six biggest Halloween costume trends from this year:
1. Nintendo
Nintendo had a revival in 2017 with the release of the Switch console. And just last month, a new Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, picked up widespread praise. Nintendo characters were back in full form just in time for Halloween.
Blue overalls. Red and green caps. Yes, the classic Super Mario Brothers are an instant Halloween hit. Theyre fun, friendly and the comfy overalls are a party plus, too. No wonder they were such a popular Halloween costume choice for this year.

2. The 1920s
The roaring 1920s are infamous for being a hedonistic and lavish decade. Think boom time. Think Gatsby. Think grand parties that would put today's celebrities to shame. Certainly, the popularity of the 1920s as a Halloween costume would suggest people love a throwback to this era.
And what 1920s style is more iconic than the flapper? Stylish and sure to turn a head or two, a flapper costume brings back an era that balanced sophistication with rebellion. It was a time that redefined the style of a generation.

3. Star Wars
Not long ago, at a Halloween party close to home... you would have been laughed out of the haunted house if you wore a Star Wars costume. And thats just the original trilogy. Lets not mention the prequels here. Never mention the prequels.
But since Disney rebooted the series, Star Wars is getting a new life (and a new image). New characters such as Kylo Ren and Rey are bringing the franchise back from the Dark Side. So, it's no wonder Star Wars is back to being one of the biggest Halloween costume categories. Dad would be proud.

4. Superheros and villains
It comes as no surprise that superhero and villain costumes remain a popular Halloween costume choice. They always are. After all, they're instantly recognisable, always relevant and pretty comfortable, too. Theyre a safe bet for any Halloween party.
While we saw a number of new hero movies hit the silver screen this year, it was last years Suicide Squad that remained a popular choice by sales for this year's Halloween. In fact, it was Harley Quinn that was the top-selling costume in this category.

5. Harry Potter
Its been twenty years since the first Harry Potter book,
Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone, was first published. In those two decades, the franchise expanded to become one of the most popular fantasy universes, ever. And that makes
Harry Potter a popular Halloween costume choice, every year round.
This year our best selling Harry Potter Halloween costume was a Harry Potter robe in adult sizes, of course. Sure, those who grew up with Harry Potter are now well into adulthood. But that doesnt mean they cant revisit the world of Hogwarts for a nostalgic Halloween.

6. Hugh Hefner
Hugh Hefner the famous magazine editor and publisher was another popular Halloween costume in 2017. His death in September this year, aged 91, created a flurry of media buzz and drove popularity for a 'Hef' costume in the October Halloween period.
Its easy to understand why it was a popular choice. The iconic robe and pipe mix a scandalous appeal with comfort and classic style the perfect mix for an adults-only Halloween costume. Though we can only imagine the kind of Halloween parties that happened at the Playboy Mansion.

What were the most popular Halloween costumes on Google?
Outside of our retail sales, what were the other big Halloween hits? According to Google Trends data, the most search for costumes this year were:
- Wonder Woman
- Harley Quinn
- Clown
- Moana
- Unicorn
Unsurprisingly, they featured a heavy influence from Hollywood films, such as superheroes, supervillains and Disney. The addition of the 'clown' category could have been influenced by the widely-publicised movie adaptation of the Stephen King novel,
It. Or perhaps
last year's creepy clown craze has come full circle.
Popular Halloween costume trends to look out for in 2018
If previous years are any indication, Hollywood films are always a popular Halloween costume choice. And there are plenty of blockbuster hits to expect in 2017. So, what can we expect for the biggest Halloween costumes of 2018?
