1. Nintendo
Nintendo had a revival in 2017 with the release of the Switch console. And just last month, a new Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, picked up widespread praise. Nintendo characters were back in full form – just in time for Halloween.

2. The 1920s
The roaring 1920s are infamous for being a hedonistic and lavish decade. Think boom time. Think Gatsby. Think grand parties that would put today's celebrities to shame. Certainly, the popularity of the 1920s as a Halloween costume would suggest people love a throwback to this era.

5. Harry Potter

6. Hugh Hefner

Outside of our retail sales, what were the other big Halloween hits? According to Google Trends data, the most search for costumes this year were:
- Wonder Woman
- Harley Quinn
- Clown
- Moana
- Unicorn
Unsurprisingly, they featured a heavy influence from Hollywood films, such as superheroes, supervillains and Disney. The addition of the 'clown' category could have been influenced by the widely-publicised movie adaptation of the Stephen King novel,
It. Or perhaps
last year's creepy clown craze has come full circle.
