Our 12 Greatest Superheroes

The best heroes inspire us to be our best selves — and to dress like it

Frankly, we don't think you can ever have too many superheroes. When we need a little inspiration, a little hope, to get up every day and fight the good fight, we turn to the sky and there they are. There's a hero for everyone, and we're going to show you a couple of our favourites, so that the next time adventure calls (to attend a costume party), you'll have all the inspiration you need.

Here are our top 12 superheroes of all time. They're brave, they're strong and they're kind. Well, some more than others — anti-heroes are technically heroes, too. Either way, We hope you see yourselves in them. Or at least see yourselves in their costumes.

Blossom Costumes has a positively heroic range of officially licensed superhero costumes. When you need one, we have loads available.

1. Superman

Where else would we begin? Kal-El, the last son of Krypton, was sent to Earth and raised by the Kents to be the greatest hero of all time. He's got super strength, super speed, super senses and he can fly. But his real power is his compassion. He's kind, considerate and humble. He's a natural leader — Superman is the hero other heroes turn to for help. And this officially licensed Superman costume drapes you in one of the most recognisable symbols on Earth. To us, it's an 'S'. But on his planet? It stands for 'hope'.

2. Batman & Batwoman

If there was ever a hero who could give Superman a run for his money, it would be Batman. Like all members of the Bat family, Batman and Batwoman lack actual superpowers. Still, even the most powerful beings in the universe know better than to cross them. If you're looking for licensed DC Batman and Batwoman costumes that'll let you skulk along the darkest edges of heroism without crossing the line, you've found them.

3. Harley Quinn

Why should adults get all the fun? And why do they want to dress up like Batdork anyway? Harley Quinn, PhD (yes, really) doesn't need the world's greatest detective to tell her right from wrong — as long as she gets what she wants, it's all good! Is she a hero? Guess that depends on who you ask. And if you meet anyone who says she isn't, let her know. She just wants to talk. This children's Harley Quinn costume is perfect for girls who know that being a good person doesn't mean you have to be a stick in the mud.

4. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Look, we know they should be first on the list. They eat pizza, they're martial arts experts, they're scientists, they're named after renaissance artists... How could anyone compete with the heroes in the half-shells? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are a fantastic group costume idea for friends or families who know they ought to be good, but are also just looking for an excuse to eat pizza all night long. So, suit up as turtle leader Leo, hot-tempered Raph, tech-wiz Donnie and everyone's favourite little brother Mikey, and go save your city.

5. Rorschach

Let's get serious. No, seriously serious. Rorschach is one of the most famous, and infamous, characters in comic history. Is he a superhero? Is he a villain? Is he a villain who just happens to be on a superhero team? That's the thing about a Rorschach test — what you see says a lot more about you than you think it does. Still, maybe there's something to admire in a man willing to put everything on the line for his principles. Throw on a trench coat with this high quality and highly affordable Rorschach mask and gaze at others as they gaze into the abyss.

6. Shang-Chi

The greatest martial artist alive has finally gotten his due. Shang-Chi is now a household name that inspires millions around the globe. As a master fighter who can hold his own against heroes, monarchs and gods, he puts fear in the heart of darkness as much as it does light in the hearts of the just. Now, you don't have to be a master of the fist to pull off this superhero costume. All you need is the right attitude. Our Shang-Chi costume comes in adult and child sizes.

7. Spider-Man

Do you know why Spider-Man wears a mask? Because he doesn't want his villains to see how afraid he is. But that's not a bad thing — the only time a hero can be brave is when they are afraid. That's just one of the many vital lessons that heroes like Spider-Man can teach us and our kids. This child Spider-Man costume will have your little ones feeling their bravest, ready to leap from couch to couch while they ensnare party pies and chocolate bars with spider-like reflexes.

8. Wonder Woman

Diana of Themyscira is so, so much more than just a princess. Benevolent and kind as she may be, she's also extremely efficient at putting boot to backside in the name of righteous justice. She's gone sword to shield with the most powerful gods on Olympus and the most dastardly villains in the universe. This licensed deluxe Wonder Woman costume not only looks spectacular, it'll have you straightening up and walking into any party with the confidence of a demi-god.

9. Captain Marvel

From the densest star clusters to the darkest stretches of the universe, one name rings out above all others! And yet, Carol Danvers wasn't always a superhero. But when responsibility came calling, she stepped up. Then she took flight. Captain Marvel teaches young girls that the point of having power isn't to prove yourself — it's to help others, whoever they are and wherever they may be. You can buy these official Captain Marvel costumes in either her classic red, blue and gold suit, or in her aqua and black Kree uniform.

10. Ikaris & Sersi

Before there were humans, there were the Eternals. Created by ancient, all-powerful beings to protect humanity from the evil Deviants, the Eternals are practically gods themselves. Ikaris and Sersi respectively embody responsibility and compassion — the two key traits of all superheroes. As major players in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these official Eternals children's costumes for Ikaris and Sersi will turn your children into major players on the playground.

11. The Crow

The Crow, or Eric Draven as he was once known, is an undead spirit, returned from beyond to right the injustice of his death. Almost totally invulnerable and endowed with superhuman strength and speed, the Crow has already become a popular Halloween costume thanks to his unique look. Pull on this high quality The Crow mask, and show the devils of the night what dark justice looks like!

12. V

Everyone has seen this face on the news before, even if some may not know its origin in the comic V for Vendetta. This is the mask of V, the romantic anarchist and vaudevillian veteran. Cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate, V is willing to do whatever is necessary to break the shackles of fascist tyranny. Whatever is necessary. V means a lot of things to a lot of people, which is why we've curated this selection of V masks, each different enough to suit your interpretation of this valorous visitor who has vowed to vanquish all manner of venal and virulent vermin.
