How to bring your favourite Star Wars characters to life

Get inspiration to create your ideal Star Wars costume

Whether you are having a Halloween party, or just think that Star Wars is the best, we have got the ideal guide for how to bring your favourite Star Wars character to life. After all, few costumes are as iconic, or as involved, as our Star Wars favourites. Think Chewbacca, Princess Leia, Kylo Ren, or the humble Stormtrooper.

Thanks to the fact that many Star Wars characters have incredibly specific looks, it's pretty simple to bring your character to life, whether you're going 100% DIY, a mix of DIY and bought items, or totally store bought.

Find a huge range of Star Wars costumes and accessories with Blossom Costumes. We stock kids, adults, and plus size costumes to suit the whole family.

Wigs

Star Wars wigs

When you're thinking wigs, the first person who probably comes to your mind is Princess Leia. The iconic dual bun look is tough to pull off (unless you're already rocking a fair amount of hair), so invest in a plain brown wig and make some buns for the perfect Leia style.

Plus, you can use a wig to your advantage to really get into character if you're a girl dressing as Obi-Wan, or a guy dressing as Qi'Ra! A wig can be the finishing touch transforming a good costume into an exceptional one.

Hairstyles

If you're not keen on investing in a wig, or you already have the hair to make your costume happen (lucky you!) you'll need to spend some time arranging your bouffant into your character's style.

  • • Going for an older Skywalker costume? Some talc in your hair will give you a distinguished look, and if you don't have the beard to match invest in one to complete the look.
  • • Check out a range of hairstyles on the Star Wars website for a truly authentic take on the hottest character hairstyles.

Don't neglect your hair as a critical part of your costume, and spend the time perfecting each part of your entire look — because it's the little things that make all the difference.

Weapons and props

Star Wars accessories

Most Star Wars characters have a gun, weapon, or accoutrement of some kind. Make sure your chosen character has all the finishing touches to really make your costume shine.

  • • If you're planning on DIY-ing your whole look, you're going to need to spend some time perfecting your props.
  • • There are countless tutorials out there on how to make a lightsaber. Some are very intensive, and some are not so intensive. The end result will depend on your overall time and dedication to the task.

You can also shop for a range of high quality Star Wars accessories for when you run out of time, or just don't have the skills to get it done!

DIY tips and tricks

Going for a DIY look for your costume? A key tip when you're pulling together your own outfit is to hit the thrift store and second hand shops for some quality fabric and base pieces that you can modify or sew together.

  • • Shop for inexpensive leather boots for a Han Solo look... who knows, you might even find a cheap leather jacket as well!
  • • Find some fabric you can drape for the ultimate Rey look — even curtains would work well for this aesthetic.
  • • Make a simple Jawa costume with a brown dressing gown or some brown fabric, add some glowing eyes with LEDs on a headband, and craft a sash out of some old fabric or plastic shower curtain.

Bringing it all together

Star Wars adult costumes

Once you have chosen your Star Wars character, you'll need to make a list of all of their accessories and features so you don't miss anything from your costume.

If you're going for a Darth Maul look you'll need to think about getting your hands on coloured contact lenses (if you're going that far), and if you're going as Chewie then you'll need to get your hands on the sash belt he wears across his shoulder.

  • • Focus on the details for your costume and you'll find that all the bigger parts come together nicely.
  • • Spend a little time working out how you're going to move, eat, drink, and use the bathroom if you are DIY-ing your costume... these things are important!

If you run out of time you can shop for a high quality and affordable Star Wars costume online. Plus, if you're thinking of going as Yoda (or one of the more involved costumes like a Stormtrooper) it might be worth considering buying a costume to save yourself the hassle of crafting a mask!
